Meet Our Pastor

The Rev. Dr. Stephen Lynn Hewlett is a native of Chester, Virginia. He is the fifth of seven children born to Dorothy and the late Walter Hewlett. He received his early education in the Chesterfield County, Public School System.

At the age of eighteen, after graduating from high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps. This was a difficult decision; however, God used this experience to challenge his drive and redirect his focus. Upon being honorably discharged from the military, he began his freshman year as a student at Virginia State College in Petersburg. He decided that he would major in political science and strive to become a lawyer. While there, he served as president of the Pre-Law Society, member of the Association of Political Scientists and a member of Pi Sigma Alpha National Honor Society.

In 1978, during his junior year, he married his childhood sweetheart, the former Linda Jean "Jeannie" Webster. He was licensed to preach on January 7, 1979 at First Baptist Church in Bermuda Hundred, Virginia where he served as youth minister for a short time.

In 1982, Rev. Hewlett graduated from Virginia State with honors, receiving a B.A. Degree in Political Science. In the fall of that same year, he entered The Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in Houston and served as president of the first year class.

He is a man who believes that preparation is essential. After completing his first year of law school, he left law school and enrolled in the Virginia Union University's School of Theology, Richmond, Virginia. In 1987, graduating with honors, he received his Master of Divinity Degree, specializing in Religion, Theology, Pastoral Counseling, Christian Education and Church Administration. Upon completion of his Divinity Degree, he returned to law school. Rev. Hewlett completed his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Texas Southern University in 1990. In 1991, he opened his first law office in Petersburg and later moved to Hopewell, Virginia where he presently maintains his practice.

Rev. Stephen Hewlett has served as Associate Minister in the following churches; Union Grove Baptist Church, Petersburg, Virginia; Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Houston, Texas; and Second Baptist Church, Chester, Virginia. He is the former pastor of Gravel Hill Baptist Church in Varina, Virginia. He was installed as the eighth pastor of Riverview Baptist Church on April 13, 2003.

Pastor Hewlett is a family man. He and Mrs. Hewlett are the proud parents of four children and eight grandchildren.
