Meet Our Pastor
Rev. Dr. Stephen Lynn Hewlett is a native of Chester,
Virginia. He is the fifth of seven children born to Dorothy
and the late Walter Hewlett. He received his early education
in the Chesterfield County, Public School System.
the age of eighteen, after graduating from high school, he
joined the United States Marine Corps. This was a difficult
decision; however, God used this experience to challenge his
drive and redirect his focus. Upon being honorably
discharged from the military, he began his freshman year as
a student at Virginia State College in Petersburg. He
decided that he would major in political science and strive
to become a lawyer. While there, he served as president of
the Pre-Law Society, member of the Association of Political
Scientists and a member of Pi Sigma Alpha National Honor
In 1978, during his junior year, he married
his childhood sweetheart, the former Linda Jean "Jeannie"
Webster. He was licensed to preach on January 7, 1979 at
First Baptist Church in Bermuda Hundred, Virginia where he
served as youth minister for a short time.
Rev. Hewlett graduated from Virginia State with honors,
receiving a B.A. Degree in Political Science. In the fall of
that same year, he entered The Thurgood Marshall School of
Law at Texas Southern University in Houston and served as
president of the first year class.
He is a man who
believes that preparation is essential. After completing his
first year of law school, he left law school and enrolled in
the Virginia Union University's School of Theology,
Richmond, Virginia. In 1987, graduating with honors, he
received his Master of Divinity Degree, specializing in
Religion, Theology, Pastoral Counseling, Christian Education
and Church Administration. Upon completion of his Divinity
Degree, he returned to law school. Rev. Hewlett completed
his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Texas Southern
University in 1990. In 1991, he opened his first law office
in Petersburg and later moved to Hopewell, Virginia where he
presently maintains his practice.
Hewlett has served as Associate Minister in the following
churches; Union Grove Baptist Church, Petersburg, Virginia;
Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Houston, Texas; and Second Baptist
Church, Chester, Virginia. He is the former pastor of Gravel
Hill Baptist Church in Varina, Virginia. He was installed as
the eighth pastor of Riverview Baptist Church on April 13,
Pastor Hewlett is a family man. He and Mrs.
Hewlett are the proud parents of four children and eight
